In partnership with UN agencies, we engaged thousands of Kenyan youths through a mobile game, collecting real-time insights for a report into Gen Z needs and aspirations.

WaCurious worked with UN Agencies to explore how young Kenyans feel about the future. The task became more urgent when Gen Z protests broke out in June 2024. The study began with qualitative field work in 11 diverse counties which gave rise to a segmentation of young Kenyans by their differing perception of and attitudes towards the future. This segmentation was used to design a simple, smart-phone based game, which allowed players to interact with, respond to, and build upon the different segments, recording both quantitative and qualitative data.

WaCurious then mobilised 150 WaCurious members in 34 counties, who played the game with more than 2500 Kenyan Gen Zs over a single weekend. In some cases WaCurious members also shot video interviews with the contributors. All the findings were immediately available for analysis, and informed a larger online, print and video report, incorporating multiple other data sources. The final multi-channel report will be published later in 2024 to support the Government of Kenya policy response to recent youth protests, and the United Nation’s new future focus launched at the recent Summit of the Future.
