A. Task Background

Shujaazinc has partnered with Karya, an Indian technology and social-impact organization focused on ethical data services and inclusive digital work to collect voice data to evaluate and train AI models. This specific project will collect hundreds of hours of speech data for this.

To collect this data, we will use Karya’s application (you will receive a link to download the app) which is tailored for this.

B. Your Role as a WaCurious Member

1. Understand the project and its goals
2. Train yourself by reading this document and completing a quix
3. Record voice data as per instructions
4. Assemble the required tools to collect this data (see what is needed below)
5. Share any challenges or insights from the field by sending a WhatsApp message to Shujaaz
6. Get paid promptly upon completion of 1 hour of recordings

C. Tools you need to complete this task

1. Your phone (with android OS and with capability to record clear voice data)
2. Reliable internet/data in your phone (we have included the cost for this in the price per task that we will give you)
3. A quiet room without background noise where you can record voice uninterrupted.

D. The Task

You will be required to complete 2 types of tasks

1.  Recording of voice data to evaluate AI models
2. Validation of voice data recorded by others like you
3. Record voice data and conversation data to train AI models

All these tasks will be in the app. 

E. Getting Ready for the task

1. To complete the task you will need to download the karya app (we will give you the link for the download once you complete training).
2. Once you download the app, please select English as your language and, also select other languages and fill in Sheng' and Swahili.
3. Proceed to sign up and create your profile by filling in your details
4. Fill all the details truthfully as it is linked to your payments
5. The following details will be needed
6. Your names (at least 2 names)
7. Your phone number (begin by selecting your country code (Kenya))
8. You will be asked for an OTP, please enter the digits  123456
9. Please read all the terms and if happy allow all permissions to proceed.
10. You will be asked to record a 15 second audio about yourself to complete the profile task.
11. Submit the task once completely filled

F. Accessing the task

• Click on the /"+ Add new project" button at the bottom of the dashboard.
• Enable location access
• Enter a task access code (we will give this to you separately)
• Click on "Submit"

G. Performing the task

• The task will now appear on the dashboard after scanning the QR code.
• Open the Hamburger menu (☰)
• Click "Refresh", and "Check for New Tasks".
• Click on the task, and follow the instructions.
• Please record a sentence exactly as it is written. You will need to ensure that you are in a quiet place, with no background noise, so that the recording is clear and clean.
• Once completed, submit the task. If partially completed within allotted time, click on submit at the top of the task pane.

H. Payments

1. Payments will be calculated and paid based on number of speech hours recorded
2. Payments will be done upon completion of at least 1 hr
3. We are paying between 8 to 12 USD for every hour of speech data recorded or validated.
4. The exact per hour rate for every specific task will be issued before the beginning of the task depending on the nature of task assigned to you
5. All payments will be done by Shujaaz using MPESA
